Code of Conduct and Team Play
As with all sports, you are asked to treat your fellow players with the normal respect and courtesy.  Inappropriate language and gestures should not be used or tolerated.  Remember that, even in the heat of competition, bowls should be a friendly game to play.  Smoking is not permitted inside the gate from the car park or in the Clubhouse.
During coaching you will learn the rules for the order of play and the etiquette. The following are the main points. Most games that you will take part in will be "Rinks" (teams of 4 players each having 2 bowls).
  • The first player or "lead" positions the mat, decides where the jack is placed by the skip and delivers his or her bowls alternating with the opposing lead, followed by the No.2 player.
  • The No.3 player assists the "skip" and agrees the "count" or score with the opposing No.3, measuring distances where necessary.
  • The final player or "skip" directs the game and plays last.
The lead or 2 should not be tempted to give advice except if asked, nor should he or she assist with the count.  Games of three players each with three bowls (“Triples”) follow a similar procedure.
More detailed rules of etiquette are given on the notice board and website.
The Club operates a safeguarding policy: for details see the notice board and website.
Etiquette
Arrive in good time.
Concentrate fully on the game and all the bowls as they are being delivered.
Be ready to bowl when it's your turn.
Do not talk, move about or wave your arms about when a player is about to bowl.
Remain behind the mat when it is not your turn to bowl.
Remember that as soon as your bowl has come to rest, possession of the rink (at both ends) passes to your opponent.
When changing ends be aware of players on adjacent mats.
Encourage and praise the team, including the skip. Bowls is a team game and everyone should be working together.
DO NOT CRITICISE YOUR TEAM OR YOUR OPPONENTS. No one deliberately plays a bad shot.
Compliment your opponent's good shots.
Admit a 'lucky shot' with grace.
Don't cheer when your opponent plays an unfortunate shot which ends in your favour.
Be gracious whether you win or lose.
Warn players on your mat and adjacent mats if you intend to play a heavy shot.
Mobile phones should be switched off during play.
Check the dress code.
